Drawing the Maj7 scale / mode slide rule:

See chart figure 092701-1You MUST be able to know this chart by heart .and the best way to do that is to draw it out on paper by memory until it becomes second nature ...which is quite simple once you understand the Major scale step sequence, and which modes are derived from each step, and what type of scale each mode is.

When you can do C Major scale at the top of the chart good, while knowing the step sequence, then try to do the same thing for all the other Major scales, paying close attention to the sharps and flats required for the proper step sequences in both the numbers and in the alpha-notes when Ionian is not C scale.  Being able to work through the Major scales and which modes come from them, will turn on many mental lights with much satisfaction.

If you want to hear what amazing things can be done with scale and chord substitution via modes, I would highly recommend listening to the CDs of non-pedal experts such as Jerry Byrd, Tommy Morrel, Junior Brown, etc; And consider that everything they play is by substitution chords of their open tuning, with the exception of slant bar passages to connect the modes and chords as they change, and occasional character licks.

If you will dedicate some reading / study time and some wood-shedding with this course, it will clear up the mystery of modes and open a door to an arsenal of music understanding and techniques .and MUCH enjoyment with the remarkable discoveries.
