The back of many lap Steels were finished with a spray-on flocking, to provide friction so the Steel wouldn't slide off a a person's lap as easy as a smoothe finish does. |
The serial number tag identifies this Steel being made in 1953. Removing and disassembling these tuners would allow a person to clean them up quite nicely. Again, some penetrating oil, a Dremel or 3M pad and some elbow grease will do just fine. DO NOT GET PENETRTING OIL ON THE KNOBS OR THE KNOB SHAFTS. The knob shafts will clean right up with the 3M pad removed of it's wet oil by squeezing between paper towels, leaving an oil residue on the 3M pad which will work just fine. |
A standard cord jack could also be installed on this guitar; And often they are by Players for which originality is not an issue. Originality would require acquiring a vintage cloth encased cord and original plug. A good thing about finding a guitar in this one's condition is that it will probably never have an exceptional all-original value anyway due to it's finish condition. ALTHOUGH, I foresee a time in the not too distant future when refinishing an otherwise all original guitar to it's new finish condition, will become popular. Notice how popular copies of old instruments is growing ! |
