Kay Vanguard.
One heckuva raucus blues machine.
This is a fantastic sounding raucus blues machine; The DeArmond "flat soap dish" pickup is located in a spot high in harmonics and mid-tones; And remarkably good clean / jazz and rythm tones too. Since I'd never had one of these before, I was really blown away when I plugged it in ....and wound up playing it for a couple of hours for several days. I love it; Right down my alley of raucus blues and high gain blues-rock tones! I've broke it out and plugged it in to show several pro guitarists visiting the shop; And they too were gleefully taken aback by the incredible tones coming out of such a unique and unassuming time machine.
Even the headstock logo plate looks like it came from some device (Refrigerator?) out of Flash Gordon's fleet !
The "nail" the previous owner reports below, was just one of the small brads that secure the logo plate to the headstock. I set it aside in a small zip loc bag and taped the logo badge down secure with de-glued masking tape (reduced the glue by rubbing the sticky side against my T-shirt).
This guitar is in need of a good cleaning-up, not badly thought, unless a customer wants to keep it's total soul, blood, sweat and tears intact. I will be delighted to expertly clean this guitar up at no additional charge if a customer desires.
PREVIOUS OWNER REPORTS: This is an old Kay electric single pickup guitar. It's in good shape but has a few flaws - one thing someone decorated the pick guard years ago with what looks like glitter and stars - it will probably come off but I didn't try it. Also the screw holes around the pick guard has some chip places from over tightening or whatever. There are a few finish flakes and scars but not too bad. The finish is original along with keys-tuners-etc. I just hooked it up and I was amazed at the vintage sound - volume and tone work fine original knobs-etc. Neck and frets look good - there is one pin or nail that has pulled through the metal plate on one side on the head stock - it's not noticeable much in the pictures but it would need to be reset to prevent it from 'snagging' on something. I guess I made it sound bad but it's pretty nice really. It's a very reasonable price for a great vintage sound.
