Repacking, sealing and paint capping of larger screw holes like this front strap button hole, are done just prior to the guitar's final assembly because of drying times involved that would otherwise slow up the guitar's work progress. Shown here are flat toothpicks filling the strap button hole. Flat toothpicks are used instead of dowels because the toothpicks will renew the hole but also leave some compression room to guide the strap button screw back into it's original position, angle, etc. ...when slightly center-pilot-tapped with a small nail. |
This is a shot of the hole primed with the first of 3 coats of hard-finish acrylic fingernail polish. This seals the toothpicks and bare wood spots from the old strap buttons scars, and prepares a seat for the new strap buttons. Most of the other marks in this shot are work dust illuminated by the camera's flash. |
