Close-up view of toothpick dowels in the screw holes. Insert the round toothpick, point first, break it off flush with the top of the screw hole, then tap it in slightly deeper than flush using the small end of a chopstick as a "punch". If any of the dowels stick up higher than the holes, then whatever is being screwed down will not be flush but raised the amount that the dowel is sticking up above flush.
Once the dowels are tapped in flush then a very small nail is used as a center punch to tap a small hole in the center of the dowel as a pilot starter hole for the screw.
