Previous Owner Report: THIS IS A DANELECTRO BELLZOUKI 12-STRING THAT I BOUGHT NEW IN NEW ORLEANS IN 1965 (SHOWING MY AGE). I GIGED WITH THIS GUITAR, AMONG OTHERS, TILL 1970. IT WAS STORED AWAY TILL ABOUT A YEAR AGO WHEN ONE OF MY NEPHEWS JUST HAD TO HAVE IT!! RELUCTANTLY I GAVE IT TO HIM AND LIKE MICK JAGGER TOLD HIM ...HE PAINTED IT BLACK. NOW,(SIGH) I HAVE IT BACK AND I'M SELLING AS IS. WHAT YOU DO GET IS: 12 VINTAGE SCHALLER DELUXE TUNERS --- AN ORIGINAL DANELECTRO LIPSTICK PICK-UP --- ORIGINAL BRIDGE --- ALL SWITCHES, POTS AND ELECTRONICS IN WORKING ORDER --- THIS GUITAR REALLY IS A GREAT SOUNDING ELECTRIC 12-STRING. YOU WORK ON THE FINISH. THE (Brown / Tan sunburst) PICTURE IS WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO (originally) LOOK LIKE.
(Denny's note: The tuners are NOT vintage Schaller Tuners, ...They're 6+6 L/R Kluson Deluxe strip Tuners. The bridge is unserviceable; Somebody took a hacksaw to the back of the bridge trying to make some god-knows-what modification to the ball-end receiver slots. Maybe he was having a religious revelation on LSD. The bridge can be used as a template for a machine shop to make another. New reissue Danelectro 12 strings bridges will not serve as replacements without modification of the mounting screw locations in the body of vintage 12 strings. The vintage bridges were not tuneamatic ...had a straight non-compensated saddle for all strings, that received / secured the string ball-ends in slots along the back edge of the bridge plate. The reissue bridges are tuneamatic and feed the 6 spanish strings through the body & bridge plate from the back of the guitars, ...and the saddles intonation datum is different as is the width of the front bridge mount screw holes. It can be done, but with modifications requiring a pretty good craftsman to do properly.
A machine shop can use the existing bridge plate to take measurements from and cut a new bridge plate. For authenticity the bridge plate is chromed brass; But were I making the bridge plate for myself, I would prefer to make it out of stainless steel and polish it to a mirror finish.
When I can get around to it, I think the nightmare finish on this guitar can be taken off leaving the original finish intact. If it can't be done, then I would dearly love to put an authentic psychedelic paint job on this guitar for it's resurrection.
