= The number 1 note in the Major scale finger pattern is the navigation spot in the pattern; Placed along the neck relative to the "Mother" Maj7 scale. The #1 note (root) of each mode will not fall under that navigator in the finger pattern; The navigator is just for navigating frets relative to the Mother Maj7, not the mode roots.
NOTICE that the navigator steps go DOWN-scale using the reverse of the Major scale forward step sequence. The forward Major scale step sequence (wwhwwwh) is the step sequence that modes are built upon going up the Major scale. The navigators go down because as the modes go upscale, the Mother Ionian Maj7 goes downscale relatively ! In other words, Gmin7 (Dorian) is made by the note G being the 2nd note of it's Ionian (Maj7), ...SO the first note of it's Ionian must be F .... which, VOILA, IS the navigator note for Gmin7 and why we play FMaj7 scale notes to get Gmin7 / Dorian!
